Castle

 

The Castle was built in the 1st half of the 16th century as one of the residents for the House of Zedtwitz on top of the hill Mikuláš nearby the St. Nicholas” Church. In the beginning of the 18th century the House of Zedtwitz was granted a special female fief which was confirmed by Emperor Charles VI. in 1724. The castle got burnt out in 1814 and wasn’t repaired again. After 1822 a classicist building was built there which nowadays houses a museum.

 

Museum

 

The Museum was founded in 1892. In the 1960s it relocated to the building on top of the hill Mikuláš where originally a castle of the House of Zedtwitz used to stand. After extensive building reconstructions in the second half of the 1980s, a local history exhibition and an exhibition of the local textile industry were opened here.

 

Salva Guardia

 

A stone relief with the Emperor’s emblem and coats-of-arms made on the basis of privileges granted to Zedtwitz in a feudal latter of 1724. The emblem symbolizes the fact that the town was relieved of obligatory accommodation for armies and possible looting. The relief was originally placed in the arch of the castle gate. After a fire it was taken down by the new owner and in 1892 it was built into a corner pillar of the garden of the present day museum.

 

St. Nicholas´ Church

 

A Roman Catholic Church built near to the place of an original late Baroque church from 1780. The Church was built by K. Wiedemann, a builder from Františkovy Lázně during the years of 1867 – 1871 as a single navy building with a transept and a 48-metre-high western tower. In the northern wall there is a memorial plaque set in to commemorate the original building.

 

Evangelic Church

 

This church used to be one of the most important historical sights of Aš. It was built during the years of 1747 – 1749 at the place of a former church from 1622. The church nave housed 1050 seats and together with benches along the three wooden galleries it had enough space for 2 500 people. The baroque altar by J. S. Zeitler from 1754 and a big organ from 1911 were the most valuable decorations of the church. During repair works in January 1960 a fire broke out and the church burnt out. Its perimeter walls were eventually pulled down. In 2003 the layout of the church was emphasized with a small wall to create a place of reverence.

 

Town Hall

 

A baroque building from 1733 built as an administrative centre of the Zedtwitz estate, destroyed by fire in 1814, rebuilt again in 1815 – 1816 according to the original designs by Angelus Pfeffer, the builder of a New Town Hall in Cheb. In 1885 the building was raised and acquired another floor whilst it was rebuilt in a Pseudo Renaissance style. After 1945 a museum and a library was situated here. In 2003 the building was repaired and its original use was regained.

 

Memorial to J. W. Goethe

 

J. W. Goethe often stopped in Aš on his journey to Bohemia during the years 1806 – 1823. His stops were first commemorated with a plague placed on the Pošta Hotel in the square. In 1932 a memorial with a fountain were unveiled in the square. The statue was made by J. Watzal. Reliefs on the pedestal depict scenes from Goethe’s works. The years when Goethe stopped off in Aš are listed on the northern side of the pedestal.

 

Monument of Dr. Martin Luther

 

This was the only monument of Luther in the former monarchy. It was unveiled in 1883 on the occasion of 400th birth anniversary of M. Luther. The author of the two-metre-tall statue is J. Rössner from Nuremberg.

 

Look-out Tower

 

It was built on the hill Háj during the years 1902 – 1903 to a plan by Dresden architect W. Kreis. The tower is 36 m high and it has become a characteristic feature of the town panorama.

 

Elsterquele

 

A memorial above the Halštrov spring founded in 1898 by the Vogtland Mountainous and Tourist Association.
